MISSION
APS Green Schools is a group of parents, teachers, students, and citizens who are interested in helping each other educate Arlington Public School (APS) students on green issues. Our mission is to foster environmental education throughout the school year, encourage meaningful and multi-disciplinary experiences in outdoor education, and decrease the environmental footprint of schools in Arlington, Virginia. We hope to make a positive difference by reducing waste, engaging the students in active projects to protect and enhance the environment, and imbuing a life-long sense of stewardship for our natural resources. Our group shares successes and challenges we face in implementing green activities and programs in our respective schools.
SOME CURRENT INITIATIVES
- Educating on conservation of water, energy, and habitat.
- Enhancing schoolyards as habitats and outdoor classrooms.
- Hosting Trash-to-Treasure drives where local businesses reuse
- materials like packing peanuts.
- 4. Reducing waste thru waste-free lunch programs and taking full
- advantage of the APS recycling program.
POSTING TIPS Please remember that:
- 1. Members are to keep discussions relevant to the APS Green Schools mission.
- 2. Members are encouraged to openly and informally discuss ideas and programs their schools undertake to achieve their own green goals.
- 3. We encourage forging strong relationships with the Arlington County government, the APSs, the Arlington County School Board, non-profits, and other entities who can help affect positive environmental change within the Arlington County schools. This group, however, will not
serve as a forum to debate on official policies and political issues that may be affected by decisions made by the group.
